Hiring a car or a driver and exploring the magnificent herdades (country estates) of the beautiful Alentejo, known for its wine and cork oak forests – for Armando Ribeiro, no other weekend pastime quite matches up. The Lisbon founder of Platform-a is a PR specialist, art adviser, concept developer and most of all, an authority when it comes to the local gastronomy scene. “The beautifully remodelled estate São Lourenço do Barrocal with its large modern and very comfortable rooms is my new favourite resort,” the charming communication professional declares. “I also love the Susanne Kaufmann products in the Zenlike spa and the superb kitchen staff.” Armando suggests exploring the vast area on foot or on horseback, before driving up to Monsaraz by car. “When you get to the white village, remember to visit the charismatic Dutchwoman Mizette Nielsen,” he continues, “she uses 180-year-old looms to weave magnificent rugs, blankets and cloaks.” Armando also recommends talking to Mizette’s son, who organises unforgettable sailing trips on the nearby Alqueva reservoir. He also manages the wonderful restaurant Sem-Fim in a converted olive mill. And where to spend the night? “Besides São Lourenço do Barrocal, there is also the Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, a famous family estate that produces its own wines, breeds thoroughbreds and runs an acclaimed restaurant.”
