The winery is an integral part of the hotel and the estate's regeneration, producing first-class single-estate wines. Hand-picked grapes form the basis of limited bottlings, the remaining grapes carefully blended before being matured in French white-oak casks. Take your time to visit our winery and enjoy a wine tasting with views across the landscape right till the foothills of Monsaraz.
Carefully blended from a number of Portuguese indigenous varieties, São Lourenço do Barrocal wines reflect the character of the 10-year-old vines from which they come from and the unique terroir where they are grown. Our reserve red wine is created from Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet while our rich mellow red wines and elegant crisp whites use also foreign varieties. All wine available for purchase in our hotel in Alentejo, in our online store and in selected shops.
Recognising the area’s outstanding terroir more than a century ago, São Lourenço do Barrocal’s founder helped to foster the region’s reputation for winemaking, planting many thousands of vines.
At the heart of the renowned Alentejo winemaking region and influenced by the Alqueva lake, the vineyard in São Lourenço do Barrocal enjoys the region's dry, hot summer days and cool nights, slowly maturing the grapes for depth of flavour. Its vines are deeply rooted in granite and schist soils, creating wines that reveal both structure and power.
Our Alentejo wines are crafted by awarded winemaker Susana Esteban. The surprising number of indigenous grape varieties that can be found in Portugal, such as Aragonês, Alicante Bouschet and Touriga Nacional for red wine and Roupeiro, Marsanne and Viogner for white, has made the Spanish-born Susana set roots in the vast, sun-washed open country of the Alentejo. Renowned for her vibrant and fresh wines, she is the winemaker responsible for all our elegant 'high expression' blends.
