Within the first Starlight Tourism Destination in the world, the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve, São Lourenço do Barrocal is a privileged setting to watch the sky at night. Enjoy the possibility to discover the stars like nowhere else, in an area protected from the light pollution of large cities. Here, you have more than 3,000 square kilometres to unite yourself to the big dome, but it is in our 780 hectares that you can look at more stories from the sky.make an enquiry
For an immersive experience in the Alentejo night sky, make an exclusive observation with Dark Sky Alqueva astronomers in the ancient bee garden or arena. Learn how to find the Polar Star, the constellations and the planets, and with the help of a telescope, observe celestial bodies such as nebulae, galaxies, Saturn and the Moon. Take a private lesson on the wonders of the sky and while having a herbal tea from our garden, let yourself be carried away by this ever amazing Universe.
In the immediate vicinity of the estate, in Courela da Coutada, is the Alqueva Lake Observatory (OLA), with a dome and a telescope for observing the night sky, a solar telescope and an observation platform in which tripods and pillars can be installed.
You can also visit the Dark Sky Alqueva Official Observatory, in Cumeada, where you can stroll through a museum located in a former elementary school, see an exhibition of Miguel Claro’s photography and, of course, do the night sky observation session.
Any of these sessions take place in groups, and they’re not in exclusivity.
